Weightlifting: Press 135 for 12

The overhead press used to be my favorite lift. However, years of stalling, as well as shoulder pain, led to my abandonment of it in favor of the bench press. Now I'm rotating it back in, pressing every Monday, utilizing my PR approach. Hopefully my shoulder will hold up.

New Music: I'm Only Sleeping

A sleepy cover of a sleepy song. The Beatles were the greatest band of all time, ain't got no controversy about that. I don't copy Paul's bass line, nor do I do the backing vocals (I can't!). Still, I think it's a decent cover. Finger-picked guitar and a few simplistic piano lines form the backbone of the track, along with a mobile bass that's got McCartney's spirit, I think.

Weightlifting: Close-grip Bench Press 240 for 10

The video claims a 10 lbs PR, but it was really a 5 lbs PR. Anyways, my progress continues, despite nearly blowing out my back on Tuesday. After doing unbelted squats, I began my deadlifts. After pulling 315, I thought my lower back felt a little funny. I put 405 on the bar and my god, it was a grinder. Nothing felt right. I deloaded to 315, thinking maybe I would just do a high rep set, but as soon as the weights came off of the ground, I put it right back down. My back felt funny throughout the day, and by the next morning it felt as though my back muscles were completely fatigued, with any lower back motion at all feeling extremely uncomfortable. I thought I was in for a two-week recovery, but on Thursday, I was eighty percent recovered. Now, on Saturday, I feel almost one-hundred percent. Just some weirdness. I think I'm overdoing it with the unbelted squatting.

Bad Poetry: The Krampus and the Boys

Up the steps it goes

Hooved feet plodding

Long hands lingering

On the banister

Its horns scraping

The stretched ceiling.

Past the old dog

Who groans in his sleep

And the parents

Who lie sleepless

Caught in-between.

There they are

In the next room

A small boy wrapped

In blankets;

A larger one

Snoring loudly.

He takes the sack

From his back

And opens it

A bottomless abyss

Into which he throws

The naughty

And not-nice.

These boys yell;

They beat each other,

They mutter obscenities

And promise retribution

Tenfold

On any who wrong them.

Their parents have their gifts

Locked up tight,

Lest they uncover

Their unearned spoils.

Father has threatened them,

Told them that the Krampus

Will come and take them

Down to hell

Where they will endure

Unceasing spankings

And sparse meals

Of broccoli

And kale.

Bad boys that they are,

They have taken the wrong lesson

From what he's tried to teach them.

When the goat-demon

Pulls back the covers,

He finds that

The little one has

A pair of scissors

Clutched in his paws.

The big one keeps

A screwdriver

With a sharpened tip

Wedged in-between

His crooked teeth.

The eyelids open slowly

Of the littlest

To see a looming monstrosity

Opening a sack

Of writhing darkness.

He lets out a yell,

A fierce cry

That awakens his brother.

Bonds forged

In brotherhood

Do not fray

Easily.

The boys leap up

From their slumbers

And crash into

The digitagrade legs

Pushing the demon back.

It stumbles onto

The old dog

Who lets out a howl,

Echoed by that of the monster's,

Who has just experienced

The pain of a screwdriver

Plunged into a knee.

Down the stairs he goes,

Having been sent

By two hearty pushes

Tumbling stair to stair,

The horns sundering,

The whole facade crumbling

As his body

Lies in a broken heap

In the entryway.

"We killed the Krampus!"

The boys yell in triumph.

Father rushes out of bed

And stands at the top

Of the landing

Horror spreading across his face.

"Boys," he says,

"What the hell did you do to Steven?"

The Esteemed Critic Reviews The Iron Claw; Neighbors; LA Confidential; Foxy Shazam Live

The Iron Claw is a wrestling biopic focusing on the Von Eric family, starring Zack Efron as Kevin Von Eric. Patriarch Fritz (played by Holt McCallany) is a wrestling promoter bitter that he never won the NWA heavyweight championship or made it professionally as an athlete, so he pushes all of his four children into wrestling, whether they want to or not. Kevin is the dutiful son--Efron plays him with a quiet dignity belying his muscular frame. Despite their wholesome nature and the faith of their mother Doris (Maura Tierny) tragedy strikes the Von Erics, so much so that Kevin begins to believe that the family name is cursed. The second half of the movie is quite the tearjerker, and even a hardened soul such as the Critic found it hard to keep his eyes dry. Despite some inaccuracies (younger brother Chris is entirely omitted from the film), The Iron Claw has a theme and sticks to it. Parents shouldn't burden their children with their dreams, and so the Critic will not force his boys into being internet bloggers, nor will they be unbearable cynics. See this one if you're a fan of wrestling or sports biopics.

Neighbors is a 2014 gross-out comedy starring Zack Efron and Seth Rogan that I missed somehow, despite appearing in theaters during my prime movie-going years. Despite more than a few funny gags (airbags utilized as launching pads had me rolling), Neighbors is undermined by its unlikely premise, as well as Rogan's unceasing babbling. No fucking frat house is moving into a suburban neighborhood without the entire neighborhood revolting! Efron is pretty good here as the frat boy who takes it too far. Worth a viewing on Netflix if you're in the mood for a dumb comedy.

LA Confidential is a film noir crime drama released way back in 1997 when the Critic was but a wee little lad. It features a male lead trifecta of Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey, and Guy Pearce, with Kim Basinger serving as the femme fatale. All four are at their best in this sweeping saga that depicts a principled young officer's struggle to weed out corruption in the 1950's Los Angles police department. Fairly violent with a few shocking scenes, this is a movie that'll have you on the edge of your seat. See, I can do the big box one-liners like the rest of them! Just forget about Kevin Spacey's abuse allegations or Crowe's penchant for throwing telephones at waiters.

The Critic was privileged enough to see glam rockers Foxy Shazam at the Brady Center in Cincinnati on New Year's Eve, and let me tell you, it was one hell of a show. Despite being a casual fan, I was won over by their excellent musicianship, impeccable stagecraft, and sheer entertainment factor. These guys seem like something out of a goddamn movie; they're just too good to be real. Definitely go see them if the opportunity presents itself. The best show the Critic's ever witnessed.
